AI Agents

AI agents that live in WhatsApp and iMessage

No new app to install: a wave of AI agents now works over text messages. Who's building them, which ones are free or open source, and how to stay safe.

The next AI app you use might not be an app at all. A growing list of AI agents lives inside the messaging apps you already have: you text them, and they get things done.

On 24 October 2026, TechCrunch published a list of more than 20 of these text-message agents.

What they do

You send a message and the agent acts: scheduling meetings, sending email, setting reminders, booking restaurants and even shopping. They remember context and connect to your other apps.

Big money

  • Instinct raised $1 billion in September 2026 at a $10 billion valuation.
  • Tab, which works on WhatsApp and iMessage, emerged in early October at a $300 million valuation.

On WhatsApp

Agents that work on WhatsApp include Tab, Folk (also iMessage and Telegram) and Rene (also iMessage and Telegram).

Free and open-source options

  • Folk is free to start, with an optional Pro plan.
  • Comma is free to start and open source, and works over Signal, Telegram and WeChat.
  • OpenClaw is open source (MIT). It runs on your own computer, and you control it through apps such as Telegram, Signal or Discord.

Be careful with access

These agents often ask for access to your email, your calendar and sometimes payments. Security researchers have also raised concerns about OpenClaw, including a malicious third-party skill found by Cisco.

Some simple rules:

  1. Give each agent the minimum access it needs.
  2. Prefer agents that ask permission before acting, such as Maverick.
  3. Many of these are still in beta or on a waitlist, so check availability in your country before you get excited.
