Carbon-X: an open AI model you can chat with about DNA
Hugging Face's Carbon-X reads DNA sequences and answers plain-language questions about them. It's open, runs on your own computer, and comes with clear warnings.
On 22 October 2026, Hugging Face launched Carbon-X, an open AI model that understands DNA.
What it does
Paste a DNA sequence, ask a question in simple language, and Carbon-X explains it.
- Explains what a sequence is likely to do
- Predicts the effect of a mutation (a variant)
- Completes sequences and generates new ones
Open and local
The model weights and the training recipe are public. You can run it on your own hardware, so research data doesn't have to leave your computer.
Not a doctor
Carbon-X is not clinically validated and isn't meant for medical decisions. Like any language model it can make mistakes ("hallucinate"), and it's weaker on long sequences.
It's an exciting research tool for students and scientists, not a diagnosis machine.
